HHS students receive the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Award

Germantown, Tennessee-- March 8, 2022--Members of Stop Poverty with Policy, a student-led organization in Memphis, co-founded by Houston High School students Sophia Overstreet and Jude Downing, received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Award in January. 
 
"[Our] team pushes for solutions to poverty by raising awareness and advocating for better quality public transit," said member Jackson Carver.  These students were recently featured in the local media as they used public transportation methods and wrote about their experiences.  MATA was impressed with the initiative shown by the students and have continued to meet with them.
 
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Award was presented at Union Baptist Church, and recognized these students for exemplifying the qualities of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..
 
Moving forward, the students will continue to work with MATA officials to collaboratively improve public transportation for everyone.
