March 2023 - Rising sixth graders from Dogwood, Farmington, and Forest Hill Elementary took time this week to visit Houston Middle School. This was a time for them to learn about what all middle school entails, and how they can find their place at Houston Middle. From the gamers club to their award winning band, there is so much for these students to look forward to.
Students rotated between three different information sessions throughout the morning. They were led by Houston Middle School ambassadors, as well as their current teachers. In the library, they were able to hear from Mrs. ShaMira Davis and Mrs. Carla Christian, as well as three student mentors. They talked about how the school day starts out, rotating classes, making new friends, and how to get acquainted with HMS. Mrs. Diana Lang also let visiting students know that she would be their sixth grade counselor, and that herself as well as students and the other faculty were there to help them.
In the old gym, students were able to explore what clubs they might be interested in. Students from Cross Country, Dungeons & Dragons, The Gamers Club, Pom and so many more had set up booths for the sixth graders to be able to see what it would be like to join their club. In the new gym, band and chorus put on wonderful performances, and HMS students had the opportunity to share what their experience has been like. They told the visiting students that band and choir, just like a sport or a club, is a great way to make friends and long lasting memories. Students don’t need any experience to join band or choir, so for many band and choir members, they get to learn how to perform all together.
Dogwood students Grace Harrison and Millie Haskins Hund said that they loved getting to learn about Houston Middle School’s Houses, and they were most excited about getting to play sports as an HMS Mustang. Grace and Millie thought the school was super nice, and they can’t wait for next year.
Thank you to Houston Middle faculty and students for creating such an inviting day for these visiting students!
