Remembering Cheryl Estes: a tribute to a distinguished legal mind

About Cheryl Rumage Estes:

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Cheryl was a native of the very community she would later serve. Her journey in education was rooted in Germantown, where she graduated from Germantown High School.

Cheryl's legal career spanned over four decades, all of which she spent with the prestigious law firm now known as Lewis Thomason, P.C. During this time, she became a trusted advisor to a wide range of clients, including employers, universities, school boards, superintendents, educators, and school administrators. Her legal expertise was a guiding light in navigating complex matters that impacted the educational landscape.

In 2018, Cheryl took on a new role as the Germantown Board of Education's attorney. Over the next five years, she proved to be a pillar of strength and wisdom for the board and Germantown Municipal School District. Cheryl's diligence, legal acumen, and unwavering commitment earned her not only admiration but also the profound respect of everyone she served.

As the board attorney, Cheryl served not only as a legal advisor but also as a trusted friend and passionate advocate for public education. Her commitment to the betterment of the community's schools went beyond her professional duties; it was a personal calling for her.

Cheryl Estes was not only a legal luminary but also an active participant in various professional organizations, non-profits, and her church. She lent her expertise and dedication to organizations such as the Memphis and Federal Bar Associations, the Tennessee Bar Foundation, the Federalist Society, the Tennessee Council of School Board Attorneys, the Junior League of Memphis, the Board of Directors for Playhouse on the Square, and Germantown Baptist Church.

In her personal life, Cheryl was the loving wife of her late husband, Jack Estes, II, and the proud mother of two sons, Jack Estes, III (Whitney) and Andrew Estes. She was also the adoring grandmother of Charles, a role that brought immense joy and fulfillment to her life.

In a heartfelt resolution passed at the August 2023 board meeting, the Germantown Board of Education formally recognized Cheryl Estes for her exemplary legal services and expressed its appreciation for her friendship.
