GMSD was proud to name three recipients of the TN District-Level Novice Teacher Award last week. This honor is a NEW part of the Tennessee Department of Education’s Educator Recognition Program, celebrating the excellent cadre of novice teachers who have made a significant impact early in their careers.
From Dogwood Elementary, GMSD choose Grace McKinney, a fourth-grade ELA teacher who has been described as a natural-born educator. Her commitment shines through with an impressive 90.9% projected mastery on Spring benchmarks. Principal Jessica Woody characterizes Ms. McKinney's approach as one of relentless preparation and passion for teaching.
Houston Middle School's Alissa Betchick, an exceptional student education teacher, has been recognized for creating an inclusive and engaging classroom atmosphere. Ms. Betchick's innovative instructional methods ensure all students have access to the curriculum, differentiated to meet a variety of learning needs. Her work, which has been showcased in previous district communications, exemplifies a commitment to high academic standards and adaptability in teaching that enhances student understanding across all subjects.
Kevin Meehan of Houston High School is honored for his extraordinary efforts in teaching Algebra I. Faced with the challenge of one of the district's most foundational classes to ACT preparedness, Mr. Meehan not only accepted the responsibility but also thrived, achieving a notable 12% increase in proficiency. Additionally, his contributions to ACT preparation courses have been integral in maintaining Houston High's impressive record of postsecondary readiness.
These three educators have not only embraced the challenges of teaching but have excelled, earning them a distinguished spot at the Educators of Excellence event in Nashville next August.
