GMSD Awarded $50,000 Perkins Reserve Grant: Farm-to-Table Fun at Houston High!

From Farm to Fork: A True Taste of Learning

Imagine this: students at Houston High planning, planting, and harvesting their own crops, then heading to the kitchen to cook up a storm with the freshest ingredients possible. Thanks to this grant, our Agriculture and Nutrition programs are teaming up to offer students a full Farm-to-Table experience. They’ll be getting their hands dirty in the garden and then getting creative in the kitchen—talk about a win-win!

New Tools, New Opportunities

But the fun doesn’t stop there. The grant also allows us to update the equipment in both the Agriculture and Nutrition labs, giving students access to the latest tools and technology. Whether they’re growing the perfect tomato or mastering food safety, our students will be working with the best resources available, setting them up for success in the real world.

Building Futures with Industry Credentials

We’re also thrilled to introduce new Early Postsecondary Opportunities through Industry Credentials. Students will have the chance to earn certifications like the BASF Plant Science Certification and the ServSafe Food Handler Certification. These credentials are more than just pieces of paper—they’re keys to future careers, and they count towards important readiness metrics that set our students apart.

A Collaborative Effort with Big Rewards

Ethan Constant, our Director of College, Career, and Technical Education, couldn’t be more excited about the possibilities. “This grant idea came straight from our amazing teachers, and their passion for bringing these programs to life is unmatched,” he shared. “Adding value to our programs through industry credentialing is a top priority, and this initiative helps us close gaps for students and raise the bar at GMSD.”
