Houston Hearts Club Vice President and Coordinated School Health work together for CPR & AED preparedness for athletics

GMSD Coordinated School Health has many initiatives that help ensure that all coaching staff and athletes are prepared in the event of an emergency, and this year, with some help from the Houston Hearts club and Houston Football, we have added a new resource for our staff.

Each year, all coaching staff must go through a real life simulation of a cardiac emergency, and they must demonstrate and execute the skills required for CPR and AED rescue. This year, Coordinated School Health created a video for staff and athletes alike to review to make sure that they are prepared before their official demonstration. This video allows for the opportunity for staff members to refresh their knowledge and ask any questions that they may have.

This year, Coach James Thomas and the Houston football team volunteered to allow their training to be filmed so that other teams can have something to review. With the help of HHS junior and Houston Hearts club vice president, Annie Phillips, this training video came to life.

The goal for the Houston Hearts club is to spread awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and ensure that everyone—especially our athletes and coaching staff—is prepared in case of an emergency. Previously Houston Hearts has also worked with the Germantown Fire Department to spread community awareness as well. Each of our students at GMSD received their CPR and AED two year certification in grades 7, 9, and 11, and this video will serve as a refresher for not only our staff, but our student athletes as well. It outlines the exact steps to take during a cardiac emergency, from starting CPR to using an AED, ensuring that everyone is ready to act when it matters most.

This crucial training video will help us to ensure that we are all prepared to keep our students, staff, and fans safe. We are thankful to Coordinated School Health, Houston Football and coaching staff, the Houston Hearts club, club vice president Annie Phillips, and the GMSD community for supporting this initiative.
