Alumni Spotlight: Anna House, Class of 2015

Anna House, a proud 2015 graduate of Houston High School, has made a name for herself in both the art and advertising worlds. Reflecting on her time at HHS, Anna credits much of her growth to teachers Amanda Schulter and Bobby Spillman, who helped redevelop the school’s art program around the time she was graduating. "It’s crazy what happens when you nurture talent," she says. “The art coming out of Houston’s art department is just incredible.”

After graduating from Houston, Anna pursued her passion at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she studied art and eventually advertising. Today, she has found the perfect blend of both worlds, working full-time as the Marketing Director at Grind City Brewery and contributing to the art world through her position on the Board of the American Advertising Federation, Memphis. She also teaches figure drawing at the Brooks Museum and nature-driven art classes at Overton Park. “I keep busy,” she joked.

Her love for art and community-building doesn’t stop there. She was able to secure Saddle Creek’s gallery space as a location for pop-ups she curates, including an upcoming showcase of student work this Friday, featuring Houston’s art students. Coming off of her last pop-up brainchild, the Uptown Arts Festival, this art show at Saddle Creek, titled “Look, Mom!,” has been an inspiring endeavor for both the curator and the students.

The show will feature over 75 incredible works of different mediums created by talented Houston High art students. Among those showcased are Addie Smith, Ella Brown, Maddie Christopher, Zoë Trommel, Kate Bauch, Sophie Crider, Siya Patel, Naomi Colon, Renee Wang, Izzy Phillips, Louis Frankel, Maddey Hester, Angelee Akin, Norie Hamner, Riley Schmitt, James Overstreet, Fatima Hernandez, Avery Hines, Isabella Cox, Adassa Colon, Olivia Weems, Claire Yang, Priya Khatri, Lauryn Bonds, Lucy Eleanor Smith, Mackenzie Neely, Finn Calhoun, and Pari Khatri. These emerging artists represent the future of Germantown’s thriving creative community, and their dedication and artistry are on full display at this event.

The community is invited to attend this exciting pop-up art show, “Look, Mom!” at Saddle Creek, which will feature live music, complimentary refreshments, and a food truck. Not only is this a wonderful opportunity to see the creativity of Houston’s young artists, but the public will also be able to purchase the impressive pieces created by these future stars. With over 200 applicants for this latest pop-up gallery event, Anna is eager to see the city of Germantown and beyond embrace these artists.

“We can’t wait for the community to see the hard work of the artists, and for the artists to get their first taste at showing, selling, and speaking about their art to art enthusiasts in their city!”

Don’t miss out on this showcase of Houston’s incredible student talent!
