Drivers on Wolf River Boulevard now encounter a burst of color and creativity at the intersection with Farmington Boulevard, where a new artistic crosswalk, designed by Houston High School alum Madison Montgomery, has been installed.
Montgomery, who graduated in 2023, created the design during her senior year Advanced Placement art class as part of a Public Art Commission contest. Her winning design, which incorporates bold neon colors and abstract patterns, symbolizes the vibrancy of Germantown’s community.
“I wanted it to stand out and be super bright,” Montgomery said. “The colors represent people, homes, and trees in a playful hide-and-seek pattern that encourages viewers to look closer and imagine the stories within.”
The project uses thermoplastic materials, which are heat-fused to the pavement for durability. “It’s as close to permanent as you can get on pavement,” said Cat Peña, Germantown’s public art manager, who praised Montgomery’s fresh color palette and simple yet meaningful design.
Montgomery expressed pride in contributing to Germantown’s landscape. “It’s heartwarming to think my design is going to be in the middle of Germantown,” she said.
The Parks and Recreation Department is working to complement the crosswalk with plants in the medians, matching its vibrant tones. A second student-designed crosswalk is planned for Wolf River Boulevard and Riverdale Road, although the timeline remains uncertain due to ongoing roadwork.
This crosswalk, part of Germantown’s Public Arts Master Plan, is one of several projects blending functionality with artistic expression. For more on this story, visit The Daily Memphian, which originally reported the details.
